Karson Harris & the Drexel Dragons Look to Build Off of 2021

by Thomas McNeeley Jan 6, 2022

The Drexel Dragons had one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2021. The team ended the year with a record of 13-3, the most wins they have recorded in a single season and the fewest number of losses. The Dragons also went 4-0 in CAA play and reached their first-ever NCAA Tournament.

Karson Harris, the 2021 CAA Player of the Year, was one of the leaders of the team as she finished first with 61 goals and second with 69 points during the 2021 campaign. A pivotal moment for the team happened early in the season on February 27th. Drexel (2-0) traveled down to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown, who had not played a game yet. Harris referenced this game as a momentum-shifting moment for the squad.

“I always say the Georgetown game was my biggest momentum shifter for me because that was a game, obviously we were nervous, Georgetown is a big name, we were going into it feeling prepared, but you’re never really sure. And we just went out and played the best lacrosse I’ve ever seen us play. It wasn’t even at that point about beating Georgetown, it was just about how good we looked on the field and how well we played, how fast we played, how clean we played and I think that gave everyone a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.”

Drexel would then go on to win their following two games to start their year with a 5-0 record. After dropping a tough contest on March 14th at Loyola, the Dragons would then string together 8-straight wins en route to the CAA Championship game versus powerhouse James Madison. They would lose in a heartbreaking 13-12 overtime loss to the defending CAA Champions.

The Dragons would then reach their first NCAA Tournament in program history as they received an at-large bid to face off against Rutgers on May 14h in Stony Brook, NY. It was a close game throughout the postseason match as Karson Harris netted three goals, however, Rutgers would go on to win 16-13.

The program will look to build off their historical season as they gear up for the 2022 year with the majority of the team’s core returning. Harris stated “There was definitely talk behind the scenes about who was coming back, we got all the calls from Jill [Batcheller]... texted our group chat ‘Alright I’m only going if you’re going’... we all were like ‘We’re all in.’”

Drexel will open their season on February 12th and will play 4-straight home games versus Wagner, Penn State, Lafayette, and Navy. You can watch the whole interview with Karson Harris on Youtube or listen to the audio on the Lacrosse Now Podcast.
