Drexel Defeats Saint Joseph’s 18-17 | LSN Game Recap

by Thomas McNeeley Mar 9, 2022

Drexel midfielder Jack Mulcahy led the way with a career-high 9 points as the Drexel Dragons defeated the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, 18-17 in a game seen live on Lax Sports Network.

Mulcahy, a 2021 Second Team All-CAA selection, led the team with 4 goals and 5 assists against the rival Hawks. Drexel received offense from across their roster as 10 players scored a goal while 11 recorded at least one point. Sean Donnelly, Ryan Genord, Aidan Coll, and Max Semple all scored 2+ goals in the win.

A massive focus was on the Drexel goalie position. Just minutes before the opening faceoff, commentators Travis Eldridge and Greg Gurenlian learned that senior goalie Ross Blumenthal was out due to injury (lower body). He was seen on the sidelines throughout the game in a walking boot. Blumenthal has been the starting goalie for Drexel since 2019 and led the team to a CAA Championship win last season versus Hofstra.

Drew McGill made the start in goal for the Dragons. In just the third appearance of his career and first start, the redshirt freshman made 9 saves (.346 SV%) in the 18-17 win.

Saint Joseph’s came in blazing at Vidas Field as they led 7-2 after the first quarter. Matt Bohmer and Mac McClaughlin both had two goals during the first 15 minutes of play. It was a 2-2 game heading into the final minutes of the quarter, but the Hawks went on a quick 5-0 run in the final 3:55 of the quarter to take a commanding lead.

The teams would continue to trade punches as the Dragons then went on a run themselves. They outscored Saint Joseph’s 5-2 in the 2nd quarter and trailed by just two goals at halftime.

The 3rd quarter was a split as Drexel and St. Joe’s each scored 5 goals. The difference in the game came in the 4th quarter when Drexel went on a 4-0 run. They were also able to play tremendous defense as the Hawks were unable to find the back of the net for over 11 minutes. The game was tied at 17’s when Drexel’s Ryan Genord scored the game-winner with 1:07 left in regulation.

This was the 29th all-time meeting between the Philadelphia rivals. Drexel had won 25-of-28 games heading into Tuesday, but the teams had split the last four meetings. Saint Joseph's defeated Drexel, 10-9 in 2020 when the last matchup occurred. The rivalry continues to be heated as the Hawks have started to close the gap between them and the Dragons.
