by Thomas McNeeley Jan 22, 2022

Lax Sports Network’s Tom Eschen and Travis Eldridge discussed a wide array of topics.

in the latest edition of Lacrosse Now which premiered on LSN on Thursday, January 22, and is now available on YouTube and as an audio podcast.

Here is a rundown of the topics covered:

Tom and Travis talk about Joey Spallina’s new NIL deal with Gait Lacrosse. The highly touted #1 recruit in the class of 2022 is committed to Syracuse University and will be attending the school in the fall. The deal is believed to be the first of its kind between a boys’ high school player and lacrosse equipment manufacturing company. Joey Spallina will be playing under legendary lacrosse player and coach Gary Gait. However, Gait Lacrosse was founded by his brother, Paul Gait. Spallina’s NIL deal with Gait Lacrosse is a 4-year contract.

Other news in the college game emerged this past week as reports alluded to movement in the Colonial Athletic Association. According to reports, the CAA could be adding Stony Brook, Monmouth, & Hampton as new members of the conference. This would create a fantastic natural rivalry between Long Island foes Hofstra and Stony Brook. The two schools are separated by just 36 miles. The CAA will be looking to add schools and also replace James Madison University. JMU announced in the fall that they will be leaving the CAA and heading to the Sun Belt Conference no later than 2023.

Syracuse sophomore attackman Owen Hiltz will also join the show. The 2021 USILA Honorable Mention All-American was second on the team with 48 points last season. He talks to Travis and Tom about his freshman season, playing under Coach Gary Gait, and why his Instagram profile picture is pizza. The Peterborough, Ontario native also lets us know which players he looked up to as a kid.

Another All-American player joins the show as Notre Dame midfielder Kasey Choma speaks with Travis and Tom. Choma led the Fighting Irish with 45 goals last season as the team finished with an 11-7 record and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals. She speaks about her role on the team as she is now an upperclassman, competing in the ACC, and her favorite parts about being on campus in South Bend. Speaking on football gamedays, Choma said “The atmosphere is amazing, being able to play lacrosse in the morning, you get juiced up at practice, we all run into the locker room, have our game day outfits on in there, change and then we all meet up in the tailgates and the atmosphere is unreal… Being able to do it with your team is even better.”

Finally, college lacrosse season is just around the corner and Travis and Tom continue to preview conferences. This week the focus is on the Ivy League and the Pac-12. The Ivy League has not played a full season since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic as the conference decided to not play in 2020 and in 2021 as well. Do the guys think Stanford will repeat as conference champions out west?

Be sure to tune in to this week’s episode as you can watch it on Youtube or listen to the audio wherever you listen to podcasts.
