Lacrosse Now Recap | November 18th

by LSN Staff Nov 20, 2021

Lax Sports Network’s Tom Eschen and Travis Eldridge discussed a wide array of topics in the latest edition of Lacrosse Now which premiered on LSN on Thursday, November 18th and is now available on YouTube and as an audio podcast.

Here is a rundown of the topics covered:

The NLL is about to return after a nearly 2-year layoff?  Some of the teams Tom and Travis feel were affected the most by the shutdown were the still defending champion Calgary Roughnecks, the Vancouver Warriors, and two teams who were in the middle of their inaugural seasons when the league was forced to stop play, the Halifax Thunderbirds, who were in the middle of their first season after moving from Rochester, and the New York Riptide.

Some of the many players brought up during the NLL conversation were Dane Dobie, Curtis Dickson, Rhys Dutch, Cody Jamison, Kyle Jackson, Callum Crawford, Reid Bowering, and Jeff Teat.

The early signing period for college lacrosse saw the number one recruit in the country, Joey Spallina, sign his letter of intent with Syracuse.  Spallina originally committed to former Orange head coach John Desko and stayed committed through the coaching change which saw Syracuse legend Gary Gait take over the program at his alma mater.  What affect will Spallina have when he arrives on campus next year and dons the number 22 jersey?  Travis and Tom discuss.

Is this the year of Charlotte North  After winning a national championship and the Tewaaraton Trophy in the spring, she recently played with the US National Team at the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic.   Now North begins preparations for her senior year with the Eagles and is capitalizing on the new NIL rules recently enacted by the NCAA.  Tom and Travis talk about the biggest name in NCAA women’s lacrosse.

Along with NIL, the transfer portal has captured the attention of college sports fans.  Charlotte North transferred to Boston College from Duke prior to the 2019 season.  A number of big-name stars in both men’s and women’s lacrosse have switched teams in recent years, Michael Sowers, TD Ierlan, Jonathan Donville, and Alex Trippi are a few.  What is the impact of the transfer portal on the game?

Another player who recently transferred is Olivia Dirks who has moved from Penn State to North Carolina.  This weekend she is playing for her new college coach Jenny Levy with Team USA at the Presidents Cup in Dallas with players she has admired like Taylor Cummings and Marie McCool.  She joined Tom and Travis to talk about both experiences.
